Dixon Center for Military and Veterans Services FAQs

Dixon Center for Military and Veterans Services was founded in July of 2012.

Leading up to the start of Dixon Center for Military and Veteran Services, The Office of Warrior and Family Support did due diligence advocating for the creation of a “Center” – outside of DoD – that will be a resource for those wanting to support veterans and their families but aren’t sure how.

The result was the creation of Dixon Center for Military and Veterans Services.  Click here to learn more about our history and to see examples of our work, review our 10-year Retrospective

The Fedcap Group, a global network of top-tier nonprofit agencies, serves as the chassis for Dixon Center, as our parent organization.  We operate as a program subsidiary of Fedcap Rehabilitation Services and are a 501c3 organization, and an IRS-qualified public charity, EIN 13-5645879 and donations are tax-deductible as allowable by law.  Donations in support of Dixon Center can be made here.

We’re a national organization, with a local presence through our thousands of community partners.  Our administrative offices are located at The Fedcap Group,  633 Third Avenue, 6th floor, New York, NY 10017.

Dixon Center for Military and Veterans Services serves as a national resource to support organizations, individuals, systems, movements, and communities in strengthening their capacity to integrate, serve, and support veterans and their families.

We are the capacity builder, not a direct service provider. We don’t ask organizations to create new programs. We invite them to include veterans—and their families—in what they already do.

We increase impact by partnering with organizations from all sectors of society – across the nation to develop, operate and sustain programs for veterans and their families.

By engaging with more communities, working across all sectors of society, and helping local organizations build and expand their capacity, we create truly transformative change.

We work at local and national levels and focus across three pillars:

Work with Purpose – Creating pathways to careers where veterans earn a family wage, have affordable healthcare, and benefits. Careers that allow veterans to set and meet their future goals.

Heal with Honor – Developing holistic solutions that focus on the eight dimensions of wellness: mental, physical, social, environmental, occupational, spiritual, intellectual, and financial; ensuring that veterans and their families, not only survive, but thrive.

Live with Hope – Accessing affordable housing—living in a safe, secure, and comfortable environment in harmony with a local community where a veteran can function independently and contribute to society as a private citizen.

As a Center, we are a resource for individuals, organizations, systems, movements, and communities interested in the long-term well-being of veterans and their families. Using our influence, ideas, and actions, we provide leadership, advocacy, innovative solutions, research, support, and training to those partners, strengthening their ability to integrate veterans and their families into their programs and activities. Our partners transform the lives of service members, veterans, and their families, ensuring they reach their full potential. Here are examples of how:

  • Resource Sharing: We have generated $12.5 million for nonprofits across the nation. We have supported the distribution of $36 million in strategic support through philanthropies and contracts to communities, individuals, and foundations.
  • Cultural Development: We supported the strategic development of organizational culture with 3,500 plus organizations to help them find, integrate, and focus on veterans and their families.
  • Data: We provide data and civic engagement mapping to support organizations from all sectors of society – public, private, social, and civic. We provide influence support to municipalities and hundreds of communities.
  • Economic Development: We provide support to community economic development projects.
  • Narrative Change: We partner with radio, television, print and online media networks, entertainment and production institutions, local communities, colleges, and/or businesses while participating in engagement opportunities across the nation.
  • Relationship Building: We work to strengthen the support of our partner relationships nationally and in more than eight hundred communities.
  • Capacity Building: We are engaged in building the capacity of thousands of organizations and like-minded individuals to address the evolving needs of veterans and their families.
  • Policy Development: Advocate and develop veteran and military wellness policy at the national, state, and local level.
  • Leadership Development: We are invested in resourcing and nurturing the process of influencing people who in turn provide motivation, purpose, and direction to recruit, integrate, train, and retain veterans and their families into their organization, program, support, or services.

Dixon Center takes its name from an American hero, Army Staff Sergeant Donnie Dixon. He was killed in action while serving in Iraq in 2007, dying as he had lived—an inspiration to those who served with him. Dixon Center isn’t named in memory of Donnie. It’s named to honor his values—loyalty and duty, respect and honor, integrity, and courage. Qualities that America’s military holds dear.
